Dr Amin Rahemtulla PhD FRCP is a Private Consultant Haematologist in London. He has over 23 years of experience as a National Health Service (NHS) Consultant. Dr Rahemtulla qualified from University College Hospital Medical School, London. He received training in general medicine at various hospitals in North London and trained in Haematology at the Hammersmith Hospital following which he undertook a period of training in research at the Ontario Cancer Institute, Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, Canada. In Toronto, he obtained his PhD in Molecular Immunology and also carried out further clinical training at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He then returned to the UK to take up a post as a Wellcome Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science and Honorary Consultant in Haematology in the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford where he conducted research in immunology. He then took up a post as a Consultant in Haematology at Hammersmith Hospital where he spent 16 years. At Hammersmith Hospital he was the lead clinician for myeloma and also treated patients with various haematological malignancies including acute leukaemia, lymphoma and chronic myeloproliferative diseases such as chronic myeloid leukaemia and myelofibrosis. He has carried out laboratory as well as clinical research during his period as a Consultant in Oxford and Hammersmith. His laboratory research was in gene-targeting and immune development, which resulted in numerous publications in high-impact journals. He has also published papers on laboratory research of bone-disease in myeloma. His clinical research included research on stem cell transplantation and carrying out clinical trials of new drugs, including bortezomib, for the treatment of myeloma. Dr Rahemtulla has had extensive experience in teaching medical students and junior doctors in training. He had been involved in teaching undergraduate and post-graduate students at Imperial College, London. He has taught on the B.Sc., M.Sc., and the M.B.B.S courses at Imperial. He was the chairman for North Thames Specialist Training Committee for Haematology (2005-2011) responsible for the training of haematology registrars in North London. He was also the Training Programme Director for Haematology in North West London and directly responsible for supervision of registrars in training. Dr Rahemtulla treats patients with a broad range of blood disorders including malignant and non-malignant conditions. He is able to offer a range of services for diagnosis and treatment of these conditions, including blood tests and bone-marrow biopsy. Blood tests can be used to diagnose various disorders resulting in a high or low number of red blood cells, a high or low number of white blood cells and a high or low number of platelets.
